Preventative Dental

Preventative dentistry is about taking good care of your teeth and oral hygiene. By taking care of your teeth, you prevent excessive plaque buildup, bacterial infection, cavities, bad breath and even the overall health of your body.

Good oral health helps prevent gum disease

Poor oral hygiene is a major contributor to bacterial infections, decay and gum disease. Also known as periodontal disease, gum disease is classified in two stages:

  1. Gingivitis – symptoms are bleeding gums, soreness, swelling and redness
  2. Periodontitis – symptoms are bad breath, receding gums, wobbly teeth and even tooth loss

Mills Road Dental is located in Martin, just minutes away from Gosnells, Orange Grove, Seville Grove, Southern River, Roleystone and Maddington.

What does a dental check-up cost? (exam/scale/clean/etc.)

A dental exam, scale and clean, including bitewing/OPG  x-rays and fluoride usually cost around $350. But, for new patients without health insurance, we have a special offer for this service costing only $199. If you have health insurance, you may receive your scale and clean free – at least once a year. Please check with your health fund for more information.

If you start to experience symptoms of gingivitis, you can usually remedy your problem by good oral hygiene. However, if you allow your condition to worsen, your gum disease will lead to periodontitis which will then require treatments by a dentist.

Some individuals are more prone to gum disease than others, due to external factors such as genetics, health conditions or lifestyle factors.

If you are prone to gum disease, you may need to be extra vigilant, and your dentist may recommend more frequent checkups.

Either way, maintaining good oral health gives everyone the best possible chance of preventing other problems down the track.

FAQs on professional teeth cleaning

Why do I need a professional dental clean?

Regularly brushing and flossing helps eliminate bacteria and keep plaque buildup at bay. However, you can’t remove all plaque through brushing and flossing alone. Plaque is a sticky substance made of bacteria that builds up on your teeth. Over time, it hardens and turns into calculus (hardened plaque), which is even harder to remove and can only be removed through a  professional clean. Additionally, a professional clean will help remove staining on your teeth, leaving you with a brighter, whiter smile.

Is professional teeth cleaning painful?

Professional teeth cleaning, or a clean and scale, should not be painful. You may feel vibrations on your teeth during the clean, but cleaning will rarely be painful. However, if you have gum disease, your gums may be sensitive, and you may require a touch of local anaesthetic.

How long does it take for an exam, scale and clean/polish?

An exam, scale and clean at the dentist is usually completed in under an hour.

What sort of instruments are used in a scale and clean?

These days, we use an ultrasonic device for much of your professional clean, which is faster, more effective and less painful than traditional methods. Additionally, we may use manual instruments  to help remove calculus that lies under the gums.

What does fluoride do?

The American Dental Association refers to fluoride as “nature’s cavity fighter”. A naturally occurring mineral, fluoride helps prevent cavities by making your enamel more resistant acid attacks, which cause decay. When fluoride is applied to the teeth, it ‘remineralises’ the enamel, providing a protective barrier.

Do adults need fluoride?

Adults need fluoride, as do children. Fluoride may help prevent tooth decay in adults. Providing you drink fluoridated tap water, regularly brush with fluoride toothpaste, and have the right treatment with your professional scale and clean, you should get enough fluoride to protect your teeth.

Why do some adults need extra fluoride treatments?

Some adults may require additional fluoride treatments to protect their teeth for various reasons, for example, if you live in an area without fluoridated water or drink only bottled water; take medications to cause dry mouth or have a disease that causes dry mouth (your saliva neutralises acids in your mouth to wash away food particles so without adequate amounts, you’re more susceptible to developing tooth decay); your gums have receeded causing tooth roots to become exposed;  you wear braces or orthodontic appliances which can trap bacteria or if you had radiation therapy to the neck or head which can damage the salivary glands.
